Throughout his career, Rafael Avila has devoted himself to providing effective management, strong team leadership, and exceptional customer service. Rafael’s professional journey has taken him from managing operations and maintenance of Chicago’s Richard J. Daley Center, leading the construction management team that rebuilt the historic Chicago Theatre marquee, and most recently helping home buyers as a Coldwell Banker broker.
A Berwyn resident for more than 25 years, Rafael also has repeatedly answered the call to be of service to his community. He has been the North Berwyn Park District Commissioner, served on the Berywyn City Council as 7th Ward Alderman, played a pivotal role in the redevelopment of Cermak Plaza, and championed the community’s “Welcoming City” Ordinance.
And in 2025, Rafael will go before Berwyn’s voters asking them to give him the honor of being their next Mayor.
Rafael’s RECORD
Fighting prejudice
As a Berwyn City Council Alderman representing the 7th Ward, Rafael was a co-sponsor of Berwyn’s first “Welcoming City Ordinance”, which passed in 2017 to help protect immigrants. Rafael was first elected in 2009 and was reelected to two more four-year terms on the City Council.
Development done right
Rafael focused on promoting new business opportunies as he successfully advocated for the redevelopment of Cermak Plaza, one of Berwyn’s biggest shopping centers.
Friend of the parks
During his four years as a commissioner on the North Berwyn Park District, Rafael was instrumental in opening up the 16th Street Theater and Senior Center. He also made sure the Berwyn Gardens got a much-needed upgrade.

RAFAEL’S PLEDGE
As Mayor of Berwyn, Rafael will review city departments to identify the support that best serves Berwyn. He will prioritize transparency and seek community input on Berwyn's issues. He will hire a professional Human Resources Director to ensure Berwyn is staffed with the best employees. And he will collaborate with schools and park boards to better create engaging activities and resources for youth and seniors.
